ninamazing: Black-and-white close up of Cosima from Orphan Black smoking. (romana ii kicks fucking ass)
Lo and behold! Another public post!

My hero of the day is Waris Dirie, who has led a life filled with the kind of trauma that I can't even imagine (see her Wikipedia article). I love it when fashion models turn out to be completely kickass. Also, did you know that the BBC is reporting that approximately 7,000 girls IN THE UK are at risk for female genital mutilation right now? That's just in the UK, mind, and if you'd asked me yesterday I'd have called that number ridiculous. Shows how naive I am.

You know that someone has had a full life when they are able to write FOUR autobiographies. I remember seeing her Revlon ads.

I had no idea that this was a practice, nevertheless a present and common one. That sounds extremely painful and dangerous. I hope that her campaign continues to bring awareness to this...who thought that cutting up a vagina was a good idea? That goes on the list with footbinding and rib-breaking corsets.

Yeah, FGM is scary as all hell -- I can't remember when I first heard about it, but it's the stuff of nightmares. It's unbelievable that it's acceptable in some places. The only way I can stop panicking about the fact that it exists is to donate to Bitch and Equality Now, so I do that. :P

I've read a fair amount about the topic but that BBC article... I physically cringed at the picture on the top. Waris Dirie is amazing for speaking out, not enough people do!

Yeah ... it's horrible. I obviously haven't read enough, since I didn't know it was this widespread, and that this many people have trouble speaking out. After the BEST surgery money can buy, she'll still never feel any sexual pleasure in that area. It's ridiculous.

Guh. It's barbaric practices like that that make me think fondly of an old quote about British colonies in India, in response to the then-practice of burning widows whose husbands had died.

"Oh, really? Well, we also have a tradition. We take men who burn women alive and hang them from the neck until they're dead. So, by all means, continue with your tradition, and then we will continue with ours."

Misogynistic "traditions" like what happened to Darie, and what continues to happen today, make me furious and sicken me. Genrally I'm all for cultural autonomy, but when the unwilling injury or death of other people comes in? Hell no.

DON'T PANIC

We celebrate peace. Yet we pay no attention to the ways of curing aggression in human beings. And when one sees in psychoanalysis hostility disappearing as people conquer their fears, one wonders if the cure is not there.
