My hero of the day is Waris Dirie, who has led a life filled with the kind of trauma that I can't even imagine (see her Wikipedia article). I love it when fashion models turn out to be completely kickass. Also, did you know that the BBC is reporting that approximately 7,000 girls IN THE UK are at risk for female genital mutilation right now? That's just in the UK, mind, and if you'd asked me yesterday I'd have called that number ridiculous. Shows how naive I am.

I had no idea that this was a practice, nevertheless a present and common one. That sounds extremely painful and dangerous. I hope that her campaign continues to bring awareness to this...who thought that cutting up a vagina was a good idea? That goes on the list with footbinding and rib-breaking corsets.
"Oh, really? Well, we also have a tradition. We take men who burn women alive and hang them from the neck until they're dead. So, by all means, continue with your tradition, and then we will continue with ours."
Misogynistic "traditions" like what happened to Darie, and what continues to happen today, make me furious and sicken me. Genrally I'm all for cultural autonomy, but when the unwilling injury or death of other people comes in? Hell no.
