ninamazing: Black-and-white close up of Cosima from Orphan Black smoking. (starbuck is my love)
Here is how much I love Slumdog Millionaire: SO MUCH. If you have not seen it yet JUST GO DO IT I don't even care if you wait for the dollar theatre or whatever you have to do but IT IS SO WELL DONE and if it grosses highly then Hollywood will give us more movies like this! OKAY?! OKAY!!

Should I do some kind of thing where like if you can prove to me that you've gone to see Slumdog Millionaire I will give you a cookie? Write you a drabble? Pose for pictures naked on the wing of a plane? (I will not do that. Unless Dev Patel asks me personally, in which case I WILL HAVE THE PLANE AND CAMERAS READY.)

(And by the way, the three musketeers are Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. D'Artagnan is the fourth. WHY AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO SEEMS TO HAVE ACTUALLY READ THIS BOOK???!!! We push Faulkner in our schools, and not Dumas? Blasphemy.)

P.S. If you've seen/made any super-exciting Slumdog Millionaire icons you should point me to them. :)

So, Slumdog Millionaire, the best film of 2008 or THE BEST FILM OF 2008??? Obvs nothing can top it. In a year of really shitastic movies, Slumdog gives me a lot of hope for what may come in 2009.

And by the way, the three musketeers are Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. D'Artagnan is the fourth.

DUH. It's like- OK everyone remembers seeing the movie at least if they never actually READ the book so why can't they remember that THERE WERE ALREADY THREE MUSTKETEERS? If someone is going to be confused about D'Artagnan you might as well entertain that maybe THE CARDINAL is the fourth musketeer! NO! It's just plain LOGIC. Astounding, I know. Stand back while I work.

Well, not that I have seen too many movies this year, but uh, YEAH, BEST FILM OF 2008. :D :D :D :D Danny Boyle and the whole crew just outdid themselves. Fantastic.

DUH. It's like- OK everyone remembers seeing the movie at least if they never actually READ the book so why can't they remember that THERE WERE ALREADY THREE MUSTKETEERS?

OhGod, THANK YOU. I felt like I was being unreasonable about this because every time I have gone the WHOLE THEATRE like erupts and is like "oh, it's D'Artagnan!" and I'm like "NOOOOO HE IS THE OUTSIDE/NARRATING PROTAGONIST YOU WONKS."

I wonder if the moviemakers meant for us to know, or not. I guess there was less suspense, but after all the massive suspense that had just occurred, I was okay with that. :P
[identity profile] braindrain.livejournal.com wrote:

No, it's not unreasonable! It's called THE THREE FUCKIN' MUSKETEERS not "Two Musketeers Look For A Third Named D'Artagnan" or "Dynamic Musketeerin' Duo Seeks Third For Trio"... does no one remember that Hollywood even split it up and made a SEQUEL "THE FOUR MUSKETEERS"??

I could tell that everyone in the theater wasn't sure, too, so I think the directors, while they may have meant for us to know, but not the characters, overestimated how well-read an American audience IS.

ROFL. You're lucky I wasn't drinking milk just now, Ike. It would have shot right out of my nose. :P

FIE on American audiences, I say. FIE.

LOL STOP CORRECTING ME YOU VICIOUS BITCH

It's all about the way you correct people, and what you correct them about. About what you correct them. Oh, this is a stupid language; isn't that why we love it?

Speaking of being literary.

And OMGYAAAAAAAAAY. I AM SO GLAD YOU SAW IT AND LOVED IT! OH THE WONDERFULNESS! ♥ (I was inspired enough after the first time to do a Dev Patel picspam, and I don't think I've done a real picspam since Firefly.)

P.S. I think the best thing about the casting is that IT IS TOTALLY AN EXCUSE TO REWATCH THE PHILIP PULLMAN SERIES. Does that make me a bad person? :P

Ahahaha. It took me a moment to realise the 'Three Musketeers' thing was related to Slumdog. I was all: 'well ofcourse it was Athos, Aramis and Porthos, why did this even come up again?!'

About the movie, I'm a little meh. Is it really all it's cracked up to be? Because I've read the novel it was based on and that was a deadly bore. :/
[identity profile] ninamazing.livejournal.com wrote:

LOL. Yeah, I figured that would confuse people, but in the end I ... did nothing at all about it. :P

Really?! Wow, well, that's good to know, but the movie is anything but a deadly bore. I could fangirl every aspect of the production. I think you'll like it. :D

The Three Musketeers is a book that is on my "To Read" list along with other classics that I SHOULD read, but that I will probably not enjoy. I tried reading The Scarlet Letter, but gave up because it was boring me and I'd rather read YA fiction. Maybe one day I will finish Tess of the Dúbervilles or The Crucible or The Count of Monte Cristo or the dozens of other classics that I want to read (although, mostly for the sake of having said I've read them)

Also, hell to the yeah with the Faulkner bashing. Him, I do not like.

What is Slumdog Millionaire about? I have only heard about it from your journal.
[identity profile] ninamazing.livejournal.com wrote:

Oh my God, dude, do NOT lump Alexandre Dumas along with other classics. Seriously. I TOTALLY get your point on The Scarlet Letter — I was bored as hell reading that, too, and I had to do it for school — and I have it on good authority that Tess of the d'Urbervilles is not worth it either — but DUMAS IS A DIFFERENT STORY. The Count of Monte Cristo is awesomeawesomeawesome, pure adventure, quite accessible, even though it looks long. And The Three Musketeers was almost as good. :) I think you will enjoy it! At least, I hope you do. Dumas is an Original Swashbuckler! He does not deserve to be relegated with the likes of Hawthorne and Hardy.

And yeah, Faulker just drives me crazy. Not least because I'm pretty sure he came up with that whole "little death" thing to describe orgasms (wtf?) and women are barely even present in his books. And also he belongs to that if-it's-depressing-it-MUST-be-good school of literary thought.

Slumdog Millionaire sounds really lame if I just try to explain the plot to people — like, when my cousins told me what it was about I was like "??? oh, whatever." but it is SO well done in every respect that it ends up being really profound. And it's a feel-good movie and there is a sweet, sweet OTP and all this hotness! It's really worth discovering the story for yourself, in the theater.

♥ ♥!

This isn't a Slumdog Millionaire comment (it can't be, it's not in my area and I haven't seen it) but I just had to say that I think we should be friends, based upon the fact that we sound like the same person.

(Except I left MIT because it was the smart thing to do. :P)
[identity profile] ninamazing.livejournal.com wrote:

WOW. We really are similar! THAT'S VERY EXCITING. :D :D

As it turns out, I left MIT too! In, um, November 2007? The current plan is that I'll go back this fall, but it sort of all depends on my mental health state and whether or not I can either (a) suffer through the incompetence and discrimination that is the Aero/Astro department (b) find something else to major in.

It looks like you found yourself an awesome new academic program — that is an astounding feat! If you have any advice ... ;)
[identity profile] astropixie.livejournal.com wrote:

I left a semester before you. Also for mental health reasons! I've been debating going back ever since, especially as the economy worsens and the need for a sharper resume looms and looms, but I'm pretty happy where I am.

It's hilarious...I even wanted to do course 16. :D But if I went back I'd probably do either 8 or 9.

I wouldn't take advice from me. I manage to frak something up...well, frequently. But Hope College is a lot of fun! (And you can double major in physics and English and people respect you for it instead of thinking you're a freak!)

Anyway, friending now. :)
